BACKGROUND

Dr. Vacanti received his MD from University of Nebraska College of Medicine, after which he trained in General Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, Pediatric Surgery at Children’s Hospital Boston, and Transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh. Currently, he is Chief of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, Surgeon-in-Chief at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children, Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Director of the Laboratory for Tissue Engineering and Organ Fabrication, and the Department of Pediatric Transplantation at Massachusetts General Hospital. He continues to study the creation of artificial organs using a biodegradable polymer scaffold to develop and shape tissue. Dr. Vacanti has authored over 275 reports, over 65 book chapters, and holds more than 80 patents or patents-pending in the US, Canada, Europe and Japan.
