Background:
Dr. Sandberg received his medical degree from the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine. He also holds a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Chicago, and was the recipient of a Medical Scientist Training Program award from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Sandberg completed residency training in the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).

Dr. Sandberg leads the anesthesia and perioperative systems design effort for the CIMIT OR of the Future project. Prior to opening the ORF, Dr. Sandberg worked collaboratively on the installation of patient care technology in the suite. Additionally, he shaped the perioperative patient care system within the OR suite and developed the interfaces with the global MGH perioperative care system. He continues to lead the CIMIT ORF perioperative systems effort, with emphases on (i) perioperative process development, (ii) technology introduction, integration & assessment, and (iii) systems engineering for patient safety.

Dr. Sandberg has broad research interests related to patient care, safety, and error management in the perioperative period. Clinical research interests include: resident education, factors affecting physician-patient communication, perioperative patient management, and perioperative patient care technology.
