For four weeks in July, the CIMIT Forum Summer Education Series offers attendees the opportunity to build an understanding of a new or important clinical or technical area.
The 2009 Summer Education Series featured CIMIT’s new Inhalation Technology Program (ITP) and innovations within this field. The objective of the ITP is to develop inhalation-based technologies that will help reduce human suffering and eventually health care costs. The ITP mission includes not only diagnosis and treatment of both acute and chronic respiratory conditions, but also systemic therapies for non-respiratory conditions. The respiratory tract can be used for local and systemic delivery of therapeutic agents. The respiratory tract can also provide a “window” for monitoring biomarkers of disease states. Areas for innovation will include use of novel combinations of gases, therapeutic agents, inhalation systems, delivery systems, “smart-delivery” or self-monitoring/dosing devices.
