Forum FAQS

Presenters:
The goal of the CIMIT Forum is to promote the exchange of ideas and information, and to provide an arena where interdisciplinary discussion can lead to breakthroughs in biomedical engineering and patient care.

Your presentation should be no more than 25 minutes, leaving 25 minutes for discussion. Dialogue is an important part of opening doors for education and collaboration. Presenters and participants bring their curiosity as much as their knowledge base.

The CIMIT Forum meets on Tuesdays from 4 – 6 PM. Each Forum includes two to three presentations with a short break. Refreshments are provided to encourage the audience to linger and talk.

The audience is a diverse group of practitioners and researchers, including clinicians, engineers, educators, scientists, and administrators. Our expectation is that there will be people in the audience who could aid you in solving a problem or with whom you may wish to collaborate. With that in mind, please include as part of your presentation general background information on your topic, the technical interdependencies and one or two technical or clinical problems that you could use help with.

  1. Be a student, be inquiring, be vulnerable
  2. Talk about a quest you are pursuing today
  3. Present in a way that is accessible to an intelligent audience who may not be knowledgeable in your field
  4. Tell a story.
  5. Say something you have not said before
  6. Tell about a failure as well as success.
  7. Talk about new patterns.
  8. Describe what you would like to do next.
  9. Dress down rather than up.
  10. Arrive in time for the beginning and stay until the end (4 – 6 PM)

Moderators:
It is our custom to have an expert in the field introduce each speaker and to lead discussion after the talk. The moderator’s mission is to:

  • provide a framework for the topic (we provide you with an abstract) including a few sentences regarding how the topic fits into the field and why it is important
  • (we’ll provide a bio) - contact the speaker beforehand in order to prepare an introduction
  • introduce the speaker at the Forum
  • act as moderator and discussion leader after the presentation - ask the first question or two to get the discussion started.

Participants
The CIMIT Forum is open to the public. No registration is required, but be prepared to sign in and to introduce yourself. We welcome you to spread the word about the CIMIT Forum to your colleagues.

The CIMIT Forum fosters collaboration through an exchange of ideas in an academically open environment. In keeping with this goal, attendees are not asked or expected to keep confidential any information they learn at a CIMIT Forum meeting. The audience is a diverse group of practitioners and researchers, including clinicians, engineers, educators, scientists, and administrators. Dialogue is an important part of opening doors for education and collaboration. Presenters and participants bring their curiosity as much as their knowledge base.

Our audience includes experts who can aid the presenters and each other in solving a problem or with whom a collaboration could develop. With that in mind, come with an open mind. Bring questions. Be prepared to introduce yourself and bring your business cards. Expect to participate.

Recordings:
Any recording (video, audio, or photography) of the CIMIT Forum without permission of CIMIT and the presenter is prohibited. Presentations may be videotaped by CIMIT.
