Forum Summary
Scientific research is a team enterprise, and the most successful researchers are those who draw on the expertise of others. In most fields, it is challenging to find new collaborators, and it is also difficult to stay connected with old ones. ResearchGate is an online social networking tool designed to help scientists connect with each other. Researchers who become members of the site create profiles with contact information and with information about their research interests and skills. Members can form groups, both open and closed, in order to share ideas related to particular disciplines. The website also allows user to search for publications in multiple major databases. Scientists can input abstracts and find similar ones, and they can also input unpublished abstracts in order to find suitable journals for publication. Nine out of ten journals allow researchers to publish their work on personal websites, so researchers are often able to make their papers available on the social networking site.
ResearchGate currently has approximately 150,000 members in more than 200 countries. The site is still under development, and feedback from users is influencing the changes that are being made. Challenges that remain relate to serving a variety of disciplines and to managing such a large community. Scientists who found each other on ResearchGate have coauthored papers together, suggesting that the website is successfully fulfilling its mission.
