Forum Summary
New technologies are providing new ways for doctors to interact with their patients. The physician’s goal is to deliver care using available technology in a way that makes sense. Existing technology can be used to facilitate synchronous and asynchronous physician-patient interactions. Videoconferencing has been used to allow patients and physicians to converse in real time, and email has been used to allow physicians to monitor patients with long-term conditions. Remote monitoring of health indicators such as caloric intake is also possible using readily available commercial devices. Although accessing the resources needed to make infrastructural changes is not always easy for primary care providers, now is the time to make changes because useful technologies are currently ready for implementation.
