AVANCEN LLC joins CIMIT's Industry Liaison Program (ILP)

CAMBRIDGE, MA - June 6, 2007 - CIMIT is pleased to announce that AVANCEN LLC has joined the Industry Liaison Program.

“Improving patient care at the bedside” is the mission of AVANCEN LLC.  In spite of the rapid evolution of technologies for diagnostics and therapeutics the direct everyday bedside care of patients in hospitals has changed very little in the past 25 years. This is the niche of AVANCEN – to develop new ideas and technologies to improve the details of patient care in the 21st century hospital. The intended outcome of these innovations is patient centered care that contributes to better patient outcomes.

The initial product offering of AVANCEN is the first oral patient controlled analgesia device for pain tablets or capsules. The device, called the  MOD®  (Medication On Demand) is a patented wireless bedside oral medication dispenser that uses Radiofrequency Identification (RFID) technology to ensure safety and security. The programmable device with memory is locked to an IV pole at the patient’s bedside. The patient wears a RFID wristband that is used to activate the device and obtain one dose of medication at a time within the programmed lockout time intervals as prescribed by the physician. The nurse uses a RFID card for programming and loading the device with a disposable tray containing eight doses of pain medication. The nurse can also query the device for the times of patient entry for medication dosing and the recorded pain score required from each patient in order to obtain their medication.

AVANCEN joined CIMIT to explore the uses of the MOD in different hospital patient populations for improved pain management.  Ideas and studies to evaluate how the device can save nursing time and healthcare dollars while improving patient pain management and satisfaction are invited.
