CIMIT Community Mourns the Loss of Friend and Colleague, Donald Baim, MD

CIMIT joins the greater Boston medical community, the global cardiology community and innovators worldwide in mourning the passing of the world-renowned heart surgeon and compassionate physician Donald Baim, MD

“Through Don’s inspirational leadership, our CIMIT community embraced novel career development strategies designed specifically to encourage the next generation of healthcare innovators to pursue ideas that bridged traditional boundaries in clinical research,” said CIMIT executive director John A. Parrish, MD.  Dr. Parrish continued, “He was forever challenging CIMIT to seek out ideas that with funding and facilitation support, these non-traditional approaches could lead to breakthroughs in the standard of care.”

As the CIMIT Site Miner at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and chair of the CIMIT Science Peer-Review program, Dr. Baim elevated the quality of the process and challenged the community to explore novel technologies that more traditional grant programs considered too early stage and too risky.  During his tenure, CIMIT funded and facilitated scores of technology innovations designed to solve unmet healthcare needs of soldier and civilian patients and their care providers.

A passionate mentor, Dr. Baim was a tireless advocate for career development programs and for finding new ways to cultivate an interest in multidisciplinary research by clinicians early in their careers.  His vision for collaborative, cross-training for cardiology and interventional cardiology was incubated with CIMIT support and instituted at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Our deepest condolences go to his family, friends, and the millions of patients worldwide who have benefited from his inspirational leadership, cardiology brilliance and compassionate care.
