2008 GUIDELINES FOR PROGRAM LEADERS
Introduction
Programs provide important structure for CIMIT. By bringing together investigators within a field, CIMIT’s Programs enhance interaction among investigators, and concentrate local activities for national recognition. Program Leaders are charged with cultivating investigators, nurturing and managing Program activities and sharing and disseminating the results.
The General Requirements for Program Leaders are:
- Commit to the CIMIT mission and represent CIMIT when called upon
- Apply expertise and experience to translational research and applications
- Hold Board certification M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent business or clinical degree
Program Leader Expectations
Program Leaders have diverse backgrounds and a range of non-CIMIT commitments. Accordingly CIMIT seeks different contributions (deliverables) from Program Leaders. In return for financial support, Programs Leaders agree to meet the expectations described as major deliverables plus four of the additional activities listed below. Funding support for 2008 Programs Leaders will be based on 2007 performance in these categories:
Major Deliverables are:
- Provide leadership and coordination to investigators who receive CIMIT funding within your program area, forging connections where needed
- Solicit new investigators and proposals for CIMIT funded work in your Program
- Participate in the Science Review Process
- Define and implement specific deliverables outlined for each fiscal-year proposal
- Present a “Futures Session” in our area once every 18- 24 months at a CIMIT Forum
- Provide quarterly reports of your program area for DOD reporting
- Attend the monthly CIMIT Director’s Meeting
- Attend the Annual CIMIT Innovation Congress (formerly called the Annual Briefing for Stakeholders)
Additional Activities are:
- Mentor CIMIT funded PIs within your program area, or see that they are mentored appropriately
- Connect CIMIT funded work to non-CIMIT funded work to get maximum leverage of CIMIT funds
- Raise external funds for use in your Program
- Attend the weekly CIMIT Forum
- Participate in non-project activities performed on behalf of CIMIT
Program Research Content
1. Individual research projects fall within a Program area by mutual consent of Program Leader and the Program Management Committee, K. Vosburgh, Chair. The projects may be initiated from several sources:
- Program Leader’s own work
- A PI proposal recruited by Program Leader
- A PI proposal not recruited by Program Leader, but where the topic falls within the scope of the Program.
2. In order for CIMIT funds to be committed to a project regardless of the source of the project, it must be approved via the CIMIT review process.
3. Size of Programs:
- There is no limit to size of Program.
- Any mixture of small / medium science, application development, or other grants / awards that fall within a Program.
Program Leaders as Investigators
A Program Leader may also be an investigator on CIMIT-supported research projects. In this case the percentage of effort proposed for research would be reviewed by the CIMIT peer review process. Therefore, a Program Leader could receive CIMIT salary support in two ways:
1. As a Program Leader with justified percentage of effort for the guidance and integration activities described above
2. As an investigator with percentage of research effort as approved by peer review
