WhenToTest.org Develops Online Tools for Effective COVID-19 Testing

New Resources Help Schools and Businesses Reduce the Risk of an Outbreak

BOSTON (July 20, 2021) — WhenToTest.org announced today the release of a revamped online platform to make it even easier for schools and employers to safely remain open or resume in-person operations. The website includes a decision support tool to assist leaders in determining how to implement an effective COVID-19 testing program for their institutions. Specific enhancements include:

  • An improved interface to help guide leaders to determine what should influence their COVID-19 testing strategy, including how vaccination rates impact testing frequency
  • Insights to help leaders compare different testing approaches, such as rapid tests, PCR tests, pooled tests, and how frequently the tests should be administered to a population
  • Educational content for implementing a testing program
  • A more streamlined experience for purchasing testing supplies through Project N95’s clearinghouse

The Consortia for Improving Medicine with Innovation and Technology (CIMIT) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Institute for Data Systems and Society (MIT IDSS) developed WhenToTest.org with support from the National Institutes of Health’s RADx Tech program.

Nancy Gagliano, M.D., Implementation Lead, RADx Tech said, “When NIBIB supported the development of WhenToTest.org last fall, we wanted to provide organizations with clear guidance on how to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in their organizations. Even with the rollout of vaccines, testing is still a critical tool to ensure COVID-19 stays in check, and this new website will give leaders comprehensive guidance and support to implement or improve on their testing programs.”

“In just over one year, RADx has helped dramatically expand COVID-19 testing choices and capacity,” said Bruce Tromberg, Ph.D., director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, part of NIH. “WhenToTest.org can help organizations evaluate a wide range of options and build the right program specifically for their needs and budget.”
